Sustain Ariana 2024
The Sustain project, whose name refers to an instrument’s natural and intrinsic ability to sustain a sound over time, will consist of a visual and sound installation made up of several painted containers that will emit long-lasting sounds by setting the material in vibration. Using a transducer placed on each container, acoustic waves will vibrate the ceramic bowls like a loudspeaker membrane. Each bowl or container, by its size and thickness, will produce a unique sound within a chorus whose harmony will depend on the potter’s hand.
Laurin Schaub has been working on the acoustic and musical properties of ceramics for several years now. At the crossroads of technology, mechanics, music and craftsmanship, Laurin Schaub’s project is also, and perhaps above all, the promise of a total tribute to the art of ceramics. By choosing to form his clay instruments on a wheel, he draws on his training as a potter; by choosing to decorate each piece uniquely, he recalls the ancestral tradition of painted ceramics; finally, by focusing on the sound of terracotta, he suddenly makes tangible the extraordinary change in the nature of the material so characteristic of the Arts of Fire.
